Welcome to the Colon Cancer Treatment Center in Pune, led by the renowned specialist, Dr. Sumit Shah, a distinguished Cancer Surgeon in Pune. Early diagnosis is crucial in the fight against colorectal cancer. Here, we highlight the importance of diagnosis and the various methods employed to detect and treat this condition effectively.

Colon Cancer Diagnosis and Screening

Screening is an essential tool in identifying colon cancer at its earliest stages when treatment is most effective. Routine screenings can detect precancerous polyps and colon cancer before they become more advanced.

Colonoscopy

In 80% of cases, colorectal cancer is diagnosed through a colonoscopy, often prompted by the presence of symptoms. This procedure allows our specialists to examine the colon’s interior, identify abnormalities, and, if necessary, take tissue samples for further analysis.

Routine Screening

Regular screenings are recommended for individuals with a family history of colon cancer or those over a certain age. Routine screenings can detect approximately 11% of colon cancer cases, making them a vital part of preventive healthcare.

Emergency Care Diagnosis

In some instances, patients seek emergency care due to sudden abdominal symptoms. In such cases, approximately 7% of colorectal cancer diagnoses are made through these emergency evaluations.

Additional Diagnostic Methods

To enhance our diagnostic capabilities, we employ various tests and techniques:

  • Blood Stool Test: This simple test checks for the presence of blood in stool samples. While it may indicate various conditions, including colon cancer, it doesn’t confirm the presence of cancer.
  • Stool Immunochemistry: Also known as fecal immunochemistry testing, this checks for hidden blood in the lower colon. Patients can conveniently collect stool samples at home using a kit.
  • Stool DNA Test: This advanced test examines DNA markers shed by colon cancers or precancerous polyps in stool samples. Patients collect a complete bowel movement at home, which is then analyzed in a lab.
  • Barium Enema X-ray: Barium, a contrast dye, is used to highlight any unusual features during X-ray imaging. Administered as an enema, it can provide valuable information about the condition of the colon.
  • CT Colonography: This non-invasive technique generates detailed images of the colon. While it’s less invasive than a colonoscopy if it reveals any abnormalities, a follow-up colonoscopy may be necessary.
  • Imaging Scans: Ultrasound, CT, or MRI scans are utilized to determine whether cancer has spread to other parts of the body, assisting in planning a comprehensive treatment approach.
